What are hammam towels?

When we tell people we sell hammam towels - we often hear "hammam towels, what are they?" or "Do hammam towels dry you?".  Good questions!

Hammam towels are also known as peshtemal, pestemal or fouta towels.  Traditionally they were used in Turkish baths and they date back hundreds of years.  The hammam towel was originally designed to help individual bathers maintain their privacy during public bathing but have morphed into a travel must have as designs and colours have evolved.

Hammam towels are made of 100% cotton and produced in manually operated looms in Turkey and Tunisia.  We work directly with the producers who are all OEKO-TEX approved.

Hammam towels have grown in popularity over recent years as people have begun travelling and using hand luggage more.  The peshtemal absorbs water as fast as a traditional towel, dries super fast, takes up less space, is easy to carry and is so is a perfect alternative to terry towels in bathrooms, pools, spas, beaches, and the gym.

Modern hammam towels come in a wide variety of designs and colours so are the perfect beach bag accessory for the discerning traveller.

We work closely with a family of experienced weavers who handloom the towels on traditional wooden machines and hand tie the fringes so each piece is made with love and slightly unique!
